Peter Cronin wonders if Holy Island is back to normal?

It is also available in paper as well as on road.

It is a while since I visited this place and last time it was pretty deserted. This time even though it was fairly cold and seemed to have had rain all day , the people were back. One of the things about the place is the tides and I had planned this well in advance and it would appear that many others had as well.

People are feeling safe again and have missed coming to places like this to relax away from the hectic city life that most of us have. Getting away from gridlocked traffic to see views like this just makes you feel so much better.

If you have never been here before , this is what you are missing and it has been a while for so many , you have probably forgotten how great this place is.

It is great to just watch the amazing landscapes and seascapes. Just spend a bit of time getting in tune with nature.

If you have not visited the castle I would recommend it. It does not take too long to have a look around so you will be able to visit lots of other interesting places on the Island. I guess this is the entrance and the front garden if that is what you get in a castle. I did ask for permission to take photographs and they said that it was ok as long as I did not use flash.

Looking down from above you can only think of the saying ” I am the king of the castle”. If you lived here you would get a different view every day as the seasons changed. Strangely , living here does not appeal to me. I like my home comforts too much but it is a great escape while you are here.

Another spectacular view from above.

I think that you would probably find easier targets if you wanted your own castle.

This is what the people in the village would have seen for years. Probably quite reassuring.

I can’t remember being here before when the tide was that far out. Probably not the place to put your towel out at this time of the year.

Sometimes you just have to write your name in the sand.

There are a few pubs on the island. I think this one might be popular with the locals .

It really is a typical North Eastern village with all the trappings.

A genuine telephone box and all in good working order as far as I can see. I couldn’t get any wifi so this might be quite important for some people.

This lovely garden is open to the public and if you want to support it there is a collection box on the way in. Maybe this is something that you have just walked past before.

The village shop and post office is an essential part of life here. There must be times when people don’t leave the island for months on end. There is a unique coexistence between the residents and the tourists. An acceptance that they each rely on the other.

The local church is pretty impressive and must have been a core of the community for many years. I expect that it was probably used by most people on the island at one time.

I hope that you have seen that there is quite a bit to see on the island and maybe consider a trip there yourself over the summer. There are other things , of course but I want to leave a few things for you to discover for yourself.
