St Mary’s Well and Bathing Pool, the secret place in Jesmond , Newcastle Upon Tyne that they don’t want you to find. Peter Cronin investigates.

Not very welcoming is it? This is the way that you get to see a historic listed building in leafy Jesmond.

The path at this point is very tidy but this may be to keep visitors out.

The recent storms have caused a lot of damage but this bit is not too bad.

Here we are , on the left of the path is the entrance to the well and bathing pool.

Tyne and Wear council seem to think that it is something open to the public.

The bathing pool at St Mary’s well. This was made a listed building in 1971 and features on Historic England’s website.

The well is situated underneath the candles. Looks like someone has gone to a lot of effort to put them there.

Probably not surprising to see a Christian symbol in what will be a holy place to a lot of people.

Looking outwards from the shrine you can see that you would probably have to know about the place and be looking for it.

This is the other entrance to the Grove , certainly they don’t want strangers finding this place.

A comical read. However you should know that you accessed the well via private property and maybe that is why it feels unwelcoming. I suggest you explore where the true pathway to the well is (not via The Grove) Now that would be a much more interesting read although it would need time to uncover its location and what has happened to it. Also worth noting is that the true well associated with the pilgrims route is one that Lord Armstrong covered up and is situated nearer to st Mary’s Chapel.
