What does “Rising Sun” mean to you? It means many things to me. Rising Sun Colliery, Rising Sun Nature Reserve or maybe the Rising Sun Pub. So you think that Newcastle upon Tyne is a big industrial city? Think again , all of this is just a few miles from the city centre.
When you walk out of the car park to enter the Nature Reserve this is the first thing that you are going to see. You know that you are in for a treat and it just gets better as you walk though the amazing countryside.
Where do you find all of this? Just head for the big Asda Store in Benton and just past the store car park if you are heading out of town is the entrance to Rising Sun.
So peaceful.
You can see that it is a little bit muddy and that will slow you down a little bit but seriously , open your eyes and take your time.
There are various routes that you can take which are well signposted. You can take the route that fits in with the time that you have available or your fitness level. I went on the heritage one today. Most people will do the routes much quicker than the estimated times that are given , but it depends on how long you want to spend seeping in the atmosphere.
This bit was a slight challenge. Don’t forget some decent shoes for walking in the countryside and of course protective clothing if you think that is necessary in the North East of England.
I didn’t mention that there is a farm as well and some useful signage as you reach it.
Just amazing to see a farm in a big city.

I was not expecting the gates to be open.
This is part of the trail that you walk through , it is not just muddy paths.
Just to let you know that you are that close to housing estates.
You have to climb to the top to get this view.
Trees as well , this place has everything.
Not sure if this has any significance but it means that you are back where you started from. There are so many great places under your nose. I quite often travel for miles to see some interesting places but sometimes it is worthwhile just seeing what is close to home.
