1 April 2022 might be liberation day, or it might be the start, of the end of the job that you do says Peter Cronin

If you think that there have been big changes in our lives over the last two years , it might be time to put your safety belt on because things are about to speed up even more.

People like to be occupied , it makes them happy but useless occupied satisfies the worker but not the boss. A tough two years for everybody and people have had to adapt and work from home and this unthinkable thing has now become a reality. Some workers have performed fantastically at home and others have not.

Some jobs suit themselves to home working and others do not. People are now valuing the delivery drivers , shop workers , emergency services and education. The government will soon be telling people to get back to the office and get the economy working again but big changes have already happened.

Hybrid working will become the norm in some industries and to be fair ,the idea of telling someone to spend time travelling to an office to work on a computer does not make much sense unless there is another benefit to the journey.

But hang on , if your job has no benefit in being done in the office do you actually have a job to do? The levelling up that the government keeps banging on about. is going to be a global levelling up. There are many well educated people in less well off countries that can do your job from their home saving money for employers , so why wouldn’t they. The world of William Golding and George Orwell is already here and rapidly progressing. If your job is purely done on a computer you might find that your are replaced with AI and all the moral dilemmas that come with that.

Basically we are going to have a big rethink about how things are done, was that zoom meeting pointless? Did you need to make that journey ? Could your job be done better by someone in a less well off country? Do you need a car? Certainly you will be questioning whether you need a car that is not an electric one.

So when the boss says that they want you back in the office and you are thinking how much time you have saved travelling , the times that you can do your household work and food deliveries during work hours and the reduction in accountability think very carefully as your job might be done by a machine or someone in another country in the near future.
