Eurovision, the UK thought that they had won but after the public vote the Ukraine took the prize. Peter Cronin asks what the whole thing was about?

The Eurovision Song Contest started in 1956 and following some sort of mix up the UK managed to get an entry in for 1957. Sandie Shaw and Lulu had it sussed and in a different way Brotherhood of Man , Bucks Fizz and Katrina and the waves have managed to get success.

Not a great amount of success for the UK and for many years we all said that it was political voting that stopped us winning . Really? Maybe it was just that the songs were just not very good . Who could forget Jemini? Well pretty much everyone actually.

So they brought in the public vote to get rid of all this political bias nonsense and maybe it worked. Songs winning because they were good rather than politics.

So , ironically the UK put Sam Ryder forward in 2022 with a catchy little spacey song and Sam thought that he might just TikTok to the top. Well aware of appealing to a broad audience he looked sort of European rather than a chap from the uk and guess what ? Despite having the best song in the competition he was beaten by Kalush from the Ukraine with a bit of a grower called Stefania , but it is no match for the song from Sam.

So Sam Ryder will probably become more famous because he was second and I don’t think he will actually mind that he did not win.

The free world made the Ukraine the winner by a public vote to support the country currently defending itself and all of our freedoms in a war that was none of their making.

One of so many things in life that you could not make it up . One thing is for sure , the Ukraine people are delighted with the support and success that they have had in Eurovision 2022. And it’s not a bad little song after all.
