England can win the world cup and Sarina Wiegman is the reason. Uninspiring matches against Haiti and Denmark , certainly , but we won. No matches are easy now as all countries have the ability to win. Yes, we did entertain the crowds against China but the biggest test yet came against Nigeria and we were up to the mark.
Sarina understands that it is about winning the competition , not just individual matches. Just enough at the start of the campaign is just enough and when you are allowed to play , you can cheer everyone up at home.
I was absolutely confident that we would beat Nigeria and that is not because they are a bad side , because that is not the case. They are a good team as are any that have got through so far. So even when we were down to ten women, hey commentator guys get real , if it’s ten men in the men’s game it’s not ten players in the women’s. Well everyone likes a little rant. So , down to ten women and the tactics changed immediately , we were going for penalties. The team trusted their leader and did what they were told to do . That is important as well . If you don’t have your team on board you won’t be able to deliver the goods.
It is amazing how often in life that when someone who knows what they are doing explains something that everyone agrees with them. Of course it is obvious when it works and that is why trusting the leader is crucial. Taking penalties under pressure is something for the one’s with the skill and experience and that was the basic that Sarina understood.
So there is no reason why we can’t win the cup . Of course that would not be possible with out the great players that we have in the team.
