Most people in the North of England have heard of the village of Corbridge and “The Angel Inn ” would probably be the first words that they would say to you if you mentioned it. I want to show you that there is a little bit more to the place.

I find the bridge over the Tyne fascinating , almost more for the things that it is not rather than the things that it is. One thing that might surprise you is that the village is not named after a bridge.

One thing that I wonder about is why did they build such a narrow bridge . Was it because before the use of cars and other motor vehicles this was quite adequate for the needs of the people so there was no point in the expense of a wider one?

One thing that has not changed over the years is the power of the Tyne River. This bridge has survived the years when others have not.

A monument outside the church in the village square. When I visited during the covid years it was obvious that such an ancient place would return to normal , maybe quicker than other places.

How easy is it to walk past the Vicar’s Pele tower without a thought. Corbridge has survived enemy attack in the past. This is some serious defence work.

Amazing history and I have not mentioned the Romans yet. It is easy to see that they probably happily coexisted with the villagers as they would have not been a threat and would have been useful to the Romans.

This part of the village just looks so ancient. Unlikely to change in the future too.

St Andrews looks like it was the centre of the community in the past. This is a substantial piece of work for a small village.

This is a beautiful place. It must have great memories for many people over the years.

This is probably not what you would have expected before you entered the space. Maybe that contributed to it’s survival.

So much bigger than you would have expected for a place like this.

The King’s oven is something that I was not expecting . There must have been a real community spirit.

The Wheatsheaf Pub , quite different in character to the Angel. Maybe this was more for the locals .

I was not surprised to find a Parish Hall . I was surprised not to see a church in close proximity . In an ancient place you have to use the space that is left as the modern way of demolishing buildings probably was not an option.

The other side of the church shows the extent of the building more dramatically than from the interior.

One thing that strikes you here is the preservation of the buildings. The old way was not the way that we do things now. You can decide which you prefer.

Not short of places to eat, drink and socialise here. It does rather look as if it has been extended over the years.

I am not sure who thought this was a good idea . I am pretty certain that Hadrian did not have a cycle.
There are a lot more things to find in Corbridge. I just thought that I would give you a flavour so that you can add it to your bucket list if you have not been here and if you have , it might remind you of happy times here.
Love, love Corbridge. You should try the Healing Garden, just outside Corbridge.
Thank you for sharing, Peter l!
