St Mary’s Well, Peter Cronin takes a look from the other side.

Hidden in leafy Jesmond in Newcastle upon Tyne this is St Mary’s Well. I am about to show you the secret way to get there without upsetting anyone.

If you go to Jesmond Dene Road before you get to the Banqueting Hall there is a little known road called “The Grove” which you need to find. No longer usable by motor vehicles you are beginning to see the influence that those that don’t want you to find it have. Don’t worry though , this is not a “right of way” , it is a public road.

This is the road that you have to walk down, not sure why they see the need for the double yellow lines.

This is the view of St Mary’s Chapel from The Grove.

You pass St Mary’s Chapel on your journey to the well. This famous place of prayer is at the bottom of Reid Park Road. Pilgrim Street is named after the pilgrims coming to

this place.

I don’t really see the point of the stained glass window. Maybe someone can explain it to me?

It does seem to be a peaceful place to reflect in.

This is the real start of your journey, note that there are no helpful signs for you . They definitely want this to stay secret.

When you get up the hill on your right you will see the official signage which shows you that it is an official site and you are fully entitled to be here.

This is the first view that you get and if you did not know about it you would probably just walk on.

These items are just about the actual well.

I found this at the back of the plot. I don’t know why it is there. What does it signify?

The view of the site that most people will not see.

This is what you have come to see.

A final look at this secret place.

You can continue down the public path having seen the well.

If you continue down the Grove you will end up in the busy bars of student Jesmond.
