Next week the restrictions will be removed and the government is still paying people not to work. If we were actually out of the woods they would have finished paying that. I am not suggesting that financial support should stop, far from it. It is just typical of the not joined up thinking that the government continues to issue.
If you make mask wearing optional in supermarkets then you make it impossible for the supermarkets to enforce the wearing of them. Even if they had the desire to enforce , they won’t have the time to do it . I go to a shop that only allows people to shop alone. They challenge people who usually come up with some sort of excuse that they just met in the queue. You later see them sharing a basket , putting things on and off the shelves and discussing which type of salt they should buy. The point is that when we have rules , people break them so no chance when it is advisory.
You might ask if this really matters and actually it does. If someone is nervous about basic shopping then it is important. You can restrict a lot of your life but there are some things that it is difficult to do so.
Some things are a choice and ironically these are the things that may have some enforcement. If you want to go to. a football match you probably will have to be double vaccinated or have taken a test. Even more confusion.
We really need a gradual getting back to normal , but I can’t see that happening if it is optional. If you look at the rest of the world you will see that restrictions can be reintroduced so we will have to trust the general public to take the right course of action.
