Is it right to put the olympics on during a pandemic? You don’t have to have one when there is an international problem. The 1940 and 1944 olympics were cancelled so it is possible. So the olympics have been allowed to go ahead with a minimal audience and it has to be said the atmosphere created by a crowd is certainly missing. That in itself may not be a reason to cancel it . We have had a lot of football played without a crowd but it is pretty obvious that it doesn’t really work.
If a leading athlete has to pull out because of covid 19 does that mean that any medal holders will have a diluted award, well clearly so , but does that mean that the games are useless?
When you have a competition that comes around once every four years it is a long time for a young person to miss out. Maybe it is worth putting the olympics on for the sake of the people taking part.
Unfortunately , whatever the rights and wrongs the games have gone ahead. For me the games have lost their sparkle. On balance they should probably be taking place but it is a second rate competition for no fault of those taking part. What do you think?
