
A stunning coastline and if you spoke to the locals you would be told that it is definitely not Sunderland but it is not far away, this is what I would class as North Whitburn. It looks peaceful but strangely nothing could be further from the truth. However , this is not a people caused problem.

Here is the clue to the problem, the Souter Lighthouse which has saved many ships from running aground and saving many lives.

Maybe it doesn’t look so peaceful now.

This is the one that will draw the tourists in.

Well you would not actually live in a lighthouse that is not out at sea. It is not the only one, there is St Mary’s just up the road but usually you don’t get them on shore.

You are allowed to go to the top of the lighthouse now as it has been decommissioned . The miner’s village is no more, they used to live in tough conditions.
