There are some things in life that you know are going to be so significant that you have to be there at the time. If you are old enough you will have seen the 1966 match. If you had any sense you would have been watching the Women’s Euro final, and trust me , the world will have been watching. Roy Keane was right about one thing , winning this match was everything. That is not to say that a lot of progress had already been made , but honestly , you just have to win, and we did.
Head Coach Sarina Weigman has been truly awesome from start to finish and I can only dream about what she might do next year.
Talking about dreams , who would have thought that substitute Ella Toone would score? Even better , who could dream that you could come on as a substitute and score your first England goal ? Bring on Chloe Kelly.
It was a proper team effort and that is the thing that got the win in my opinion. Even the introduction of the experienced Jill Scott at a time that it really mattered cannot be underestimated.
So a game changer? Actually yes. The win will encourage girls to play football , the finance will increase massively , and countries in the world that do not share our values will see what can be done when people are given the opportunity.
I was talking to a freind just before half time and she expressed the view that she had never been interested in football until this competition but was really getting into the excitement of the game but she did like the fact that it was not like the men’s game with all the falling over and stuff.
In the game that I saw , there were professional fouls, swearing , shoving and pushing, and what was all that stuff at the end where they would not let the ball leave the corner flag? Personally I like winning.
