England women are through to the final and the country is rocking. Probably shocking the rest of the world by showing that they are the real deal. Beating Austria by a single goal was probably what we were expecting , not that breathtaking but slow and steady England. Maybe they woke you up with 8 against Norway and 5 against Northern Ireland , but come on they had not really come up with any of the real contenders. Beating Spain was a serious result even thought they did concede a goal , but that was a serious team. England could hope for maybe a goal against Sweden but no, 4 nil to the Engerland , beating the favourites , the country is going wild. This is a major achievement getting to the final but nobody in England will be betting against them and we don’t even know which team we will be up against , but do we care? Bring it on !
So is the star of the show Alessia Russo, the cheek , the skill , the confidence and the joy of that goal will be the goal of the competition. But what about Beth Mead with a goal and an assist for a glorious goal from Lucy Bronze? Or maybe some justice for Fran Kirby with her goal , not forgetting a wonder save from Mary Earps? Or maybe the excellent management skills of Sarina Wiegman?
No the real star of the show is none of the above but actually all of the above. When you are in a team game you need to play as a team , get rid of the prima donnas , support each other . I can’t remember seeing an international team playing so much as a team , supporting each other and genuinely happy with the success of their teammates. Don’t get me wrong, there is real skill in the team but playing as a team they are so much better than the sum of the individuals. Maybe people in other walks of life could take a leaf out of their book.
